The bedroom was another blank space, with just a ceiling fan overhead and some white built-in shelving to break up the room. The original dining room, surrounded by white walls on all sides, was sorely lacking in direction. Prepping the walls for paint first involved buffing with 220-grit sandpaper, and priming came next. Gaines recommends the oil-based Kilz Original interior primer that has a stain blocker to hide the knots in the wood. While Mrs Gaines found her design inspiration in New Mexico, the founder of the global design label found his further east in Thailand. However, while the designer revealed that memories of traveling sparked her living room ideas, she is not alone. Leave it to the Gaines to transform a shack into a total package. This Crawford, Texas-based home was super-unique with concrete counters, shiplap, repurposed wood, and touches of steel. "Not much has changed and I'll probably regret this photo but it's worth saying again kids... the world needs who you were made to be!" she wrote in the accompanying caption.
Simple and fresh, it favoured neutral colours and existing structural elements—such as shiplap—while introducing industrial accents. When you think “Joanna Gaines,” you probably think “shiplap” — and rightfully so! It’s one of the cornerstones of the modern farmhouse style and a staple in a Gaines design project.Sometimes on Fixer Upper, the couple finds original shiplap underneath drywall and paint it white. Gaines notes that once those key pieces were in place, it was easier to fill in the gaps with the large fiddle-leaf fig tree, the mirror, and smaller decor items. “All of these elements work together to create a natural flow that makes the room feel both functional and beautiful,” Gaines says. Honestly, I hate doing laundry, but if I can make it a space I love being in, it can make the chore that I hate the most actually be somewhat enjoyable. I also loved making it feel like it was always a part of the farmhouse; I didn't want it to feel like an add-on.
A country gal herself, Gaines dropped the farmhouse trend right at our feet, and we'd be remiss not open the door and enter her world. Touches of Joanna’s farmhouse style are visible in almost all of Joanna's designs, including in this rustic-chic living room from Fixer Upper (seen above). Many of Gaines’ designs include monochromatic wrought-iron light fixtures and hardware features that are a signature of the Waco-based expert.
